 In search of one’s own balance with the city

  

 

 

   Feđa Šehović rođen je 1930. godine. Na Filozofskom fakultetu u Zagrebu 1954. godine diplomirao je knji-ževnost. Radio je kao profesor, kratko je bio slobodni novinar, od 1965. do 1967. ravnatelj je Drame Hrvatskog narodnog kazališta u Splitu, zatim knjižničar i ravnatelj Znanstvene knjižnice u Dubrovniku, da bi od 1985. sudjelovao, izgradnji Doma Marina Držića, a onda postao i njegovim prvim voditeljem. 

   Bio je vrlo aktivan član Matice hrvatske koncem šezdesetih I početkom sedamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća sve do njezina ukinuća. Kraće vrijeme bio je i urednik časopisa Dubrovnik u tom za Maticu vrlo teškom razdoblju djelovanja. U obnovljenoj Matici devedesetih godina. ponovno je među njezinim najzauzetijim članovima radnicima (među ostalim i u uredništvu časopisa Dubrovnik). 

   Najteže trenutke Grada u njegovoj novijoj povijesti Šehović kuša proživljavajući ih u svome domu, ne napuštajući ga ni onda kad se sve činilo tako beznadnim, sokoleći i samog sebe I branitelje Grada. Tako je nastao njegov ratni dnevnik Zla kob zaborava, 1992. godine, prva knjiga dnevničkih književnih zapisa iz Domovinskog rata. 

   Šehovićev curriculum vitae ne podudara se sa životopisima američkih pisaca; on je kao tipičan hrvatski pisac cijeli svoj život bio i ostao uz knjigu, uz teatar i uz Dubrovnik osim što je na početku karijere kraće vrijeme bio je u službi u Hrvatskom narodnom kazalištu u Splitu. 

   Sveukupno dubrovačko književno iskustvo, a ono nije malo, nepregledan je lexis posvećen mitu o Dubrovniku. Tjelesni obris Grada, njegov lik, mirisi njegovi, njegova lica i okusi, vanjština grada dostupna prvom dodiru prolaznikova oka - to je posuda u koju i Feđa Šehović smješta unutrašnjost njegova Grada, satkanoga od povijesnog pamćenja, vlastitih sjećanja i nemira, slutnji i namjera, nezadovoljstva i pobune, susreta i ljubavi. 

   To je slika Grada koja, zakriljenawrivlastitom simbolikom, pretvara općenitost u vlastitost, prolaznost u trajnost, funkciju u obred, a sve to u namjeri da se odoli tragičnoj kratkoći dana, ljudi, godina, da se opstane unatoč neizbježivu nestajanju, ukidajući i sebi i dugima pravo na ravnodušnost. 

   Feđa se, dakle ne upućuje tražiti ključ opstanka Dubrovnika kroz vjekove. On ište mjeru vlastitog odnosa prema Gradu. Dubrovnik je mit, a ovaj veliki dubrovački pisac jednako je posvećen tom mitu doživljavajući ga na svoj način, ne kao tradicionalnu priču nego kroz jedan osebujni smisao, kroz zasigurno i vlastito iskustvo došljaka, onoga tko je došavši u Grad u njemu stasao i sazrijevao, aktualizirajući taj Grad novim ljudskim sudbinama i njihovim životopisima, i tako mit o Gradu čineći i svojom osobnošću živim i bogatijim. Na tom mitu provjerava vjerodostojnost svojih uspomena. 

   On piše bez napora, jednostavno slažući dijaloge, a jezikom i govornim efektima dočarava pravu raguzeansku atmosferu, odabravši najčešće zamišljenu govornu komunikaciju građanskog svijeta I dubrovačkih marginalaca s početka 20. stoljeća, nastavljajući tako tematske i stilskojezične osobitosti njegovih, dubrovačkih književnih prethodnika. Feđa Šehović u svakom je slučaju, i u svim svojim dosadašnjim ulogama, osebujni kulturološki fenomen, dubrovačke I hrvatske književnosti.    

   Njegov intenzivni i bogati spisateljski rad, njegovo društveno zalaganje za uvijek bolju i ljepšu sliku Grada kojeg živi, pa i njegov ubojiti cinizam ili sarkazam, ruganje svemu primitivnom, svemu što ne zadovoljava visoke standarde Gradamita i Feđe Šehovića, sve je to samo izraz ljubavi kojom ovaj veliki dubrovački pisac obgrljuje svoj Grad. Kao kroničar vremena on je ostavio izvrsne karikaturalne zapise o povijesnom razdoblju koje već palo u zaborav, a nezaobilazan je njegov rad na proučavanju, bilježenju i njegovanju hrvatskog jezika kakav se sačuvao na ulicama i trgovima Grada Dubrovnika i u svakodnevici njegova života.

    Dubrovnik je uvijek u središtu njegove pozornosti, a njegova kontinuirana polustoljetna književna prisutnost u kulturnom životu Grada oplemenjuje ga bogatom paletom vlastitih književnih spoznaja i doživljaja i daje mu respektabilni značaj I osobitu vrijednost. Feđa Šehović markantno je svojim dramskim I romansijerskim opusom ispunio nekoliko desetljeća prošloga stoljeća, i evo korača i 21. stoljećem i nastavlja biti neprijeporna književna i kulturnopovijesna činjenica dubrovačkog života.

 

 

 

 

 

   Feđa Šehović was born in 1930. In 1954, he graduated in Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb He worked as a professor, as a journalist for a short period, as director of the Croatian National Drama Theatre in Split from 1965 to 1967, as librarian and director of the Science Library in Dubrovnik, and since 1985, helped raise the Home of Marin Držić, then becoming its first manager. 

   He established the Lero Student’s Theatre at the end of the sixties. He was a very active member of “Matica hrvatske” in the late sixties and early seventies of the last century and up until it ceased to function. He was the editor of the Dubrovnik magazine for a short time, at a time when “Matica hrvatske” went through very difficult times. In the restored “Matica hrvatske” of the nineties, he was once again among the most fervent working members (on the editorial staff of the Dubrovnik magazine, among other things).

    In his more recent history, Šehović underwent the most difficult trials of the city in his home, not leaving even when things seemed to be utterly hopeless, encouraging himself and the defenders of the city. His diary called “Zla kob zaborava” - The Evil Fate of Oblivion was written like this in 1992, the first book written as a diary with literary records of the Homeland War. 

   Šehović’s curriculum vitae does not match that of American writers. As a typical Croatian writer, he spent his entire life alongside books, the theater and Dubrovnik. He only spent a short time in the service of the Croatian National Theater in Split at the start of his career. 

   His entire Dubrovnik literary experience, which is not negligible, has been dedicated to the myth on Dubrovnik. The physical contours of the city, its image, scent, face and tastes, the appearance of the city that immediately catches the eye of a passersby - this is the vessel in which Feđa Šehović places the interior of his city, woven from historical memory, personal memory and unrest, suspicions and intentions, dissatisfaction and rebellion, encounters and love. 

   This is a picture of a city that, shielded by its own symbolism, transforms generality into singularity, transience into permanence, function into ceremony, and all with the purpose of resisting the tragic shortness of the day, people, year, to survive in spite of the inevitable dwindling, taking away his right and that of others to be indifferent. 

   Therefore, Feđa does not set off to look for the key to the survival of Dubrovnik through the ages. He seeks the measure of his personal relationship with the city.M. Dubrovnik is a myth, and this great Dubrovnik writer is equally dedicated to this myth, experiencing it in his own way. Not as a traditional story, but through a special meaning, through his own personal experience as a newcomer, one who grew and matured upon coming to the city, actualizing this city with new human destinies and their life stories, and so making the myth of the city more alive and richer with his personality. He tests the veracity of his memories on this myth. 

   He writes effortlessly, simply building up the dialogue, and the language and speech intonations invoke a real Ragusean atmosphere. He most frequently chooses the imaginary speech of the citizen’s world and Dubrovnik marginal figures from the early 20th century, continuing the thematic and specific language style of his Dubrovnik literary predecessors. In any case, Feđa Šehović is a special cultural phenomenon of Dubrovnik and Croatian literature, in all of his roles up to now. 

   His intensive and rich writings, his social efforts for an always better and more beautiful picture of a city that is alive, and his deadly cynicism and sarcasm, mocking everything primitive, everything that does not satisfy the high standards of a myth-city and Feđa Šehović, it is all just an expression of love with which this great Dubrovnik writer embraces his city. As a chronicler of time, he has left excellent caricature records of a period in history that has fallen into oblivion. His work on the study, recording and preservation of the Croatian language as it has been preserved on the streets and squares of the city of Dubrovnik and in his own everyday life must be read. 

   Dubrovnik is always the focus of his attention, and his continuous literary presence in the cultural life of the city for half a century has enriched him with a rich palette of his own literary discoveries and experiences, giving him respectable importance and special value. Feđa Šehović, has distinctly covered the few decades of the last century with his dramas and novels, and he now strides the 21st century as well, continuing to be the undisputable literary and cultural- historical figure of Dubrovnik life.
